People will often decide which trim of a truck they want simply by how the grille looks. So, we thought it might be helpful to line up all the 2022 Toyota Tundra grilles to show you the differences.
Toyota did us a solid by providing a lot of photos of the Tundra in varying angles, so we figured we’d give you a good sampling of the photos we were given. Scroll to the bottom for the trim-by-trim galleries.
There are two unfortunate things to note, however: We don’t have any shots of the SR, and there are no interior shots of the SR5. Thus, we don’t yet have the chance to see the most basic version of the 2022 Tundra, and we have no idea what the base 8-inch infotainment screen looks like – though we do have one spy shot video that seems to show the smaller screen.
SR5 Tundra grille
The SR5 is one trim off the base, and the grille is going to be on the plain side of the spectrum – if you can call all that yawning black plain. It has a lot of black plastic, and you see some flat black trim surrounding the Toyota logo. This specific vehicle appears to have either the TRD Off-Road or Sport package because there’s a TRD stamped in the plastic to the right of the logo. Another big thing to note: This trim gets base halogen headlights.
Limited Tundra grille
This is where the grille starts to look a little nicer. You’ve got a bright chrome surround, and the black plastic turns to an attractive dark brushed gray. The bits surrounding the Toyota logo are smoothed out and look more a part of the design rather than tacked on, and rather than an interlocking pattern, there are strong horizontal lines. There’s also a shiny black insert at the bottom of the grille that separates the face from skid plat, and it has TUNDRA stamped into it. You also get fog lights and the up-level headlights.
Platinum Tundra grille
OK, now we’re talking. This is where the grille actually looks like something we could buy. In addition to a chrome surround, the grille insert has an elegant chrome patter that surrounds the Toyota emblem. There is also a body-colored strip below the grille, which houses the fog lights and is stamped with the word TUNDRA in bold letters. This version we’re looking at also has the optional, up-level hybrid powertrain, which is seen by the grille emblem being outline din blue.
1794 Tundra grille
We have yet another grille treatment on the 1794 grille, with a dark grey (plastic?) insert that has the same interlocking pattern seen on the SR5 with a flat solid piece near the Toyota logo that is stamped with TRD. Similar to the Platinum, this grille is also surrounded by chrome, but instead of a body color piece at the bottom, it has a chrome strip that is stamped with TUNDRA.
TRD Pro Tundra grille
This top-tier, rugged trim has the same grille pattern as the SR5 and 1794, but it’s in a shinier black. You also have the amber lights and a light bar on the grille. One of the interesting, and potentially polarizing, differentiators on the TRD Pro grille is going to be the bottom part, which is plastic with a camouflage pattern on it. You see this pattern on the wheel cladding as well as on the top of the tailgate in the back.
The bottom line
Toyota did a nice job of visually separating the Tundra trims just by the grille treatment – both with materials and batters. Limited and Platinum, which will be more on the luxury side, have a more elegant look, and then SR5, 1794 and TRD Pro look more rugged.
Our pick of the litter would absolutely be the Platinum – mostly because of the body-colored bit at the bottom of the grille. To us, It just closes off the look rather than having a weird wide-mouthed fish-face grille without an end. A close second would be the 1794 with its chrome.
How about you? Do you have a favorite grille?
