Bernadine Harris, 72

TEMECULA —— Bernadine Harris, 72, died of breast cancer,Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005.

Born Aug. 10, 1933, in New York City, she lived in Temecula for24 years. She was a former postal security officer and a realestate broker. She was a children’s story author. She was a memberof the Church of Self Realization.

Mrs. Harris is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Al andMaureen Harris of Long Beach; grandchildren Danielle, JessicaNicholas and Matthew; and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28,at 42030 Main St. Courtyard in Temecula. Her cremains will bescattered.

The family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society inTemecula.

J. Newell Stannard, 95

RANCHO BERNARDO – J. Newell Stannard, 95, died of congestiveheart failure Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at Remington Nursing Home inRancho Bernardo.

Born Jan. 2, 1910, in Owego, N.Y., he lived in Rancho Bernardofor 28 years. He developed the world’s first Ph.D. program inradiation biology. He researched and wrote the 1900 page book”Radioactivity and Health, A History.”

He was the adjunct professor of community medicine and radiologyat the University of California, San Diego, Medical School from1978 to 1999. He was assistant director for education in the atomicenergy project at the University of Rochester.

He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant attached to theBureau of Medicine and Surgery during World War II. He received amaster’s degree and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in Cambridge,Mass. He was a member of the Health Physics Society and St.Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Poway.

Dr. Stannard was preceded in death by his parents Marian and J.Ellis Stannard.

He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Helena Ruth Stannard ofRancho Bernardo; daughters and sons-in-law Susan and Jack Frazierof Valley Center, Dianne and Ted Eppler of Hunters, Wash., BonnieDesRosiers of Rancho Bernardo and Brenda and Pat Hanisee ofHaughton, La.; brother and sister-in-law Robert and Lettie Stannardof Wellington, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; and 11great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12,at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Poway.

Private inurnment is planned.

The family suggests donations to the J.Newell Stannard GraduateScholarship fund at the University of Rochester School of Medicineand Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y.

Kelly Turner, 43

LAKE FOREST – Kelly Frederick Turner, 43, died Sunday, Sept. 18,2005, at Irvine Regional Hospital.

Born Nov. 6, 1961, in Chula Vista, he lived in Lake Forest forsix months. He was a software engineer and started with Atari. Hewas an executive producer for Point View in Irvine.

Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his father, Robert B.Turner, in 1984.

He is survived by his companion of one year, Thomas Grissingerof San Jose; mother Rosetta B. Turner of San Marcos; brothersRobert E. Turner of El Cajon and R. Bruce Turner of Southport,Conn.; sisters and brothers-in-law Roz and Don Tague of San Marcosand Margaret and Larry Olson of Arlington, Wash.; two nieces; andtwo nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, atEl Camino Memorial Park in San Diego. Private burial will takeplace at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Katrinarelief efforts.

Daryl Schirmer, 50

NORTH COUNTY — Daryl D. Schirmer, 50, died Wednesday, Sept. 21,2005, at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

He lived in San Diego County all his life. He graduated from Mt.Miguel High School in Spring Valley. He participated in youthsports in Encinitas and was a member of Seacoast CommunityChurch.

Mr. Schirmer is survived by his wife, Renee; daughter Hannah;son Nathaniel; and brothers Danny, Dale and David.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today, Sept. 24, atNorth Coast Calvary Chapel, 7188 Avenida Encinas in Carlsbad. Areception will follow at Seacoast Community Church.

Ivan Tyler, 93

VISTA – Ivan Kenneth Tyler, 93, died Thursday, Sept. 15,2005.

Born Oct. 1, 1911, in Roxbury, N.Y., he lived in Vista for oneyear. He was an office manager for General Electric for 35years.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, wherehe was a bombardier and tailgunner and flew B17 missions overGermany. He received the Purple Heart and the Distinguished FlyingCross. He was invited to Buckingham Palace for tea with the royalfamily.

He was a HAM radio operator for more than 60 years. He was amember and past master of the Sandy Hill, N.Y., Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Tyler was preceded in death by his first wife of 37 years,Isabelle Tyler, in 1977; and second wife Kathleen Tyler in2001.

He is survived by his sons, Robert Tyler of Oceanside and LeRoyTyler of Fort Edward, N.Y.; daughter Lorraine Mammone of Carlsbad;eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Inurnment is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at RoxburyCemetery in Roxbury, N.Y.

Robert McDonald, 72

ESCONDIDO – Robert Bruce McDonald, 72, died of heart disease,Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at his home in Lawrence WelkVillage.

Born Dec. 6, 1932, in Cleveland, he lived in Lawrence WelkVillage since 1986. He was a self-employed paving contractor forABM Paving in Columbus, Ohio. He was a licensed real estatebroker.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Heattended Ohio State University and was president of the AgonisClub, and the Athletic Booster Club of Buckeye Athletics. He was aBuckeye and Big 10 fan. He was a member of the RotaryInternational.

Mr. McDonald is survived by his wife of 28 years, Jeanne R.McDonald of Escondido; sons Wesley Bedell of Naples, Fla., and GaryBonard of Chula Vista; daughter Theresa Bell of Tallahassee, Fla.;brother Dale McDonald of Cleveland; and sister Dorothy Schneider ofCleveland.

A memorial will be held at a later date in Cleveland. Inurnmentwill take place in Crown Hill Memorial Park in Twinsburg, Ohio, ata later date.

Richard Krueger, 48

VISTA – Richard Dale Krueger, 48, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005,in Oceanside.

Born Jan. 25, 1957, in Rock Springs, Wyo., he lived in Vista forsix years. He was a mechanic for Ranch Foods. He was an A.E.S. tanktester in Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, and a haul truck operator forU.S. Steel.

Mr. Krueger is survived by his parents, Glenda and Richard F.Krueger of Vista; daughters Terry Trowridge, Delores Gardiner andJessica Belden, all of Fort Myers, Fla.; brother Ronald Krueger ofOmaha, Neb.; sisters Barbara Smith of Oceanside, Terry Dailey ofVista and Michelle Keagy of Carlsbad; and eight grandchildren.

A celebration of life was held Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Smithresidence.

Grace Leibold, 80

ESCONDIDO – Grace Clara Leibold, 80, died Monday, Sept. 19,2005.

Born Oct. 26, 1924, in Los Angeles, she lived in Escondido for 11/2 years. She lived in Palomar Mountain for 22 years previously.She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Naval Officers WivesClub and the Pauma Valley Garden Club. She enjoyed golf, gardeningand exercising.

Mrs. Leibold is survived by her husband of 62 years, BillLeibold of Escondido; daughter and son-in-law Ericka and RichardWaidley of Laguna Beach; sons and daughters-in-law Bill Jr. andMarie Leibold of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and James and JacyLeibold of Hollister; sister Mary Clarke of Carson City, Nev.;grandchildren Eric, Kevin, Haley, Hunter, Cole, Tyler and Kaitlyn;and one great-grandchild.

Private family services and cremation are planned.

Ross Smith, 79

VALLEY CENTER — Ross Harlan Smith, 79, died Monday, Sept. 19,2005.

Born May 28, 1926, in Riverside, he lived in Valley Center for24 years. He retired in 1981 as crew foreman for SouthernCalifornia Edison Co. He served in the U.S. Navy Pacific Theatre inWorld War II and in the Army during the Korean War and JapanOccupation. He enjoyed farming and gardening.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Penny Smith of Valley Center;sons Bruce Smith of Riverside, Michael Smith of Corvallis, Ore.,and David Smith of Truckee; four grandchildren; and twogreat-grandchildren.

No services will be held at the request of the deceased.

Jose Polanco, 73

SAN DIEGO – Jose Rafael Polanco, 73, died Wednesday, Sept. 21,2005, at Pomerado Hospital.

Born Oct. 24, 1931, in Mazatlan, Mexico, he lived in San Diegofor 17 years. He enjoyed singing, fishing and watching soccergames.

Mr. Polanco is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lucia Rodriguezde Polanco of Chula Vista; sons and daughters-in-law Carlos Polancoof Tijuana, Rafael Polanco of San Diego, Jesus and Sunny Polanco ofChula Vista, and Omar and Julia Polanco of Clairemont; daughtersMirna Polanco and Lorena Polanco, both of Tijuana; a sister inMexico; and grandchildren Jesus Jr., Edmundo, Alberto, Abraham,Carlos Jr. and Lucia.

A Mass will be celebrated at 4:30 p.m. today, Sept. 24, at SanMiguel Catholic Church in Tijuana. Inurnment will follow.

Evelyn Rosen, 90

ESCONDIDO — Evelyn L. Rosen, 90, died Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, ather home.

Born April 19, 1915, in Chicago, she lived in Escondido for 32years. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Escondidoand attended the women’s circle. She enjoyed baking, playing bridgeand traveling.

Mrs. Rosen was preceded in death by her husband, Karl B. Rosen;and daughter Kathy B. Rosen.

She is survived by her daughters, Judith E. Rosen of Albion,N.Y., and Karol B. Summers of New Rochelle, N.Y.; and grandchildrenKristie, David, Lauren, Sharon and Karl.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28,at the First Congregational Church of Escondido with the Revs. JohnRoberts and Judith E. Rosen officiating.

Private inurnment at Oak Hill Memorial Park is planned.

June Howard, 85

RANCHO BERNARDO — June M. Howard, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 21,2005, in San Diego.

Born June 27, 1920, in San Francisco, she lived in RanchoBernardo for 31 years. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Howard was preceded in death by her husband, Jules Howard,in 1989; son Gary Horowitz in 1944; sister Dorothy Nelson in 1991;and brother Sydney Rosenberg in 1998.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Martin J. andDebbie Howard of Santa Clarita; daughter and son-in-law Judy and#Ray Giles of San Ramon; brother and sister-in-law Theodore andRose Rosenberg of Atherton; five grandchildren; and threegreat-grandchildren.

A funeral service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, atBeth Olam Cemetery Chapel, 6000 Santa Monica Blvd. Los Angeles,with Sidney Kordell officiating.

Interment will follow at Beth Olam Cemetery with Kordellofficiating.

William Hogan

William Joseph Hogan, 61, a construction superintendent andartist died on September 18, after a brief illness.

Born August 10, 1944, in Hibbing, Minnesota, Bill moved to Vistain 1954. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, heattended Palomar College and Humboldt State University. He spentthe last 12 years living and working in Washougal, Washington.

Bill loved golf, basketball, and many outdoor activities. He wasan artist, philosopher and voracious reader. In addition, he was anaccomplished woodworker. His many friends and family membersenjoyed receiving his creations as gifts.

Bill deeply loved his son, Rafe, and cherished the special timesthey shared together.

Bill is survived by his son, Rafe Hogan of Portland, Oregon; hissister, Kay Crowell and brother-in-law Rob Crowell of Vista,Calif.; his nephews, John Crowell of Oceanside, Calif., MikeCrowell of Vista, Calif., and David Crowell of Vista, Calif.
