Star Wars 10: Everything We Know (2024)

Disney is developing a handful of Star Wars movies, and one of them is rumored to continue the mainline saga with Star Wars 10. While Lucasfilm has been releasing plenty of Star Wars content on Disney+ including The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Andor, there hasn’t been a theatrically released movie since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. Star Wars movies have been on hiatus due to the mixed reception to the sequel trilogy and the commercial underperformance of Solo: A Star Wars Story, but they’re due for a comeback, and a number of projects have been announced for a potential theatrical release.

Rumor has it that the next Star Wars movie that Disney will release after the current hiatus will be Star Wars 10, a.k.a. Episode X, adding a new chapter to the primary saga. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the next Star Wars movie will be a direct sequel to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Since that ninth episode closed the book on the Skywalker Saga, Star Wars 10 could kick off a whole new era. Star War 10 might even jump decades into the future for a new trilogy exploring new characters and conflicts in a galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars 10: Everything We Know (1)

Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof and The Strain story editor Justin Britt-Gibson are writing a new Star Wars movie that is set to be directed by Ms. Marvel’s Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (via THR). This secretive new Star Wars movie will reportedly bring back some characters who were introduced in the sequel trilogy. Britt-Gibson boarded Lindelof’s Star Wars project from a writers’ room that assembled after Star Wars Celebration to discuss new stories the intergalactic franchise could tackle next. Other writers in the group included Station Eleven creator Patrick Somerville (who worked with Lindelof on The Leftovers), Briarpatch creator Andy Greenwald, and Obi-Wan Kenobi consulting producer Rayna McClendon.

The movie is reportedly being developed as a standalone project. Lucasfilm’s previous strategy was to develop movies in threes packaged as trilogies, but the studio’s new tactic is to approach Star Wars movies one at a time. Still, despite the standalone nature of this movie, the hope is that it will be successful enough to launch sequels. While it takes place after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, it might not be a direct continuation of the Skywalker Saga. However, it is likely to include some familiar faces from earlier movies.

Daisy Ridley sparked rumors and speculation when she posted a photo of the Yoda statue at Lucasfilm’s headquarters, confirming that she had met with the studio. While the actor claimed that there is “nothing saucy happening” with her Star Wars future, it’s entirely possible that she’s in talks to reprise the role of Rey in a new project. From Lost to The Leftovers to his widely acclaimed Watchmen limited series, Lindelof has earned critical acclaim by telling genre stories focused on character. He could be just the storyteller that Rey’s journey needs right now.

More Star Wars Confirmed

Star Wars 10: Everything We Know (2)

Lucasfilm hasn’t officially confirmed Star Wars 10, but it has confirmed that it will release more Star Wars movies. When they eventually run out of legacy characters to give their own spinoff prequels, Lucasfilm will stop looking to the past and start looking to the future. Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy has suggested future Star Wars movies will take place after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: “We’re moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space," she said. "The sequel era is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we’re going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go.

Star Wars 10 Release Date

Star Wars 10: Everything We Know (3)

Disney has yet to officially confirm when Star Wars 10 will arrive in theaters, but there are two untitled Star Wars movies that are slated for December 2025 and December 2027. It’s possible that one of those movies will be Star Wars 10. The 2025 movie could be Episode X and the 2027 movie could be Episode XI. It’s also possible that neither of them is Star Wars 10, and they’re both standalone “Anthology” movies. Either way, based on Kathleen Kennedy’s comments, both will likely explore the era after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars 10 Cast

Star Wars 10: Everything We Know (4)

There’s no official cast for Star Wars 10, but Daisy Ridley met with Lucasfilm in December 2022, which has sparked speculation that she could be returning as Rey in a future movie set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. John Boyega has said he’s not interested in reprising his role as Finn in any future Star Wars projects (via SiriusXM), so if Rey is back, she won’t be with her best friend. But she might not be completely alone, because Oscar Isaac has said (via Variety) that he would be “open” to returning as Poe Dameron.

Star Wars 10 Story Details

Star Wars 10: Everything We Know (5)

Lucasfilm hasn’t released any official plot details about where the franchise goes beyond Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but there are a few prevalent rumors. The dark side of the Force will likely persist in spite of the Sith’s destruction and the death of the Emperor, so there will still be bad guys to fight. The end of the sequel trilogy left Rey as the sole Jedi, with the Jedi Order in need of being rebuilt. One fan theory suggests that, instead of Rey, the Jedi Order will be rebuilt and led by Grogu in the post-Mandalorian timeline.

Every Known Star Wars Movie In Development

Star Wars 10: Everything We Know (6)

While a number of Star Wars movies have been announced as being in development over the last few years, none of them has been fast-tracked for production. Patty Jenkins came the closest to getting one off the ground with a Rogue Squadron movie, but then it was removed from Disney’s release schedule. Variety has since reported that neither her project nor the Star Wars movie from Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige and Loki series creator Michael Waldron is in active development any longer. Below are the movie ideas that still haven't been completely canceled yet.

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars movie: Taika Waititi, who has helmed episodes of The Mandalorian, will direct a standalone Star Wars movie that he’s co-writing with 1917’s Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Reportedly, this is now the project with the furthest development, and Waititi is possibly even set to star in the movie.

Knights of the Old Republic movie: Lucasfilm is developing a film adaptation of the Knights of the Old Republic games with Shutter Island’s Laeta Kalogridis writing the script.

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy:Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is signed on to write and direct a standalone Star Wars trilogy with no connections to the Skywalker bloodline. However, since Johnson is busy making Knives Out 3 and other projects, his Star Wars trilogy won’t be happening for a while, if ever.
