Wheat acreage expected to drop GREAT FALLS (AP) U.S. wheat acreage will be down as much as 9 million acres next year, due in part to flexibility in the new farm bill, an agricultural economist told farmers in Great Falls Wednesday.

"There is so much flexibility in this farm bill that acreage will go where it's supposed to go," said John Marten, a staff economist for Farm Journal. Marten spoke at the 35th annual convention of the Montana Grain Growers Association. The Illinois farmer said he sees a reduction in wheat acreage far below levels estimated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Wheat acreage will be down in the South in favor of other crops, and canola and other oilseed crops will take off in North Dakota next year, he said.

Marten also confirmed what Montana wheat farmers have feared for months the state's winter wheat crop is in the worst condition of any in the nation because of extremely dry conditions. Kansas and many other wheatproducing states are in good shape, he said. Marten's wide-ranging talk focused mostly on federal farm policy and elements of the new farm bill passed by Congress. "CRP as we've known it, is over," he said. "No longer is it an idle Montana program." The emphasis will be on water and wetlands conservation, he said. Also, an agricultural water -quality protection program with incentive payments for adapting water protection practices means "many farmers will find a way to make clean water soon." He called that provision "one of the 10 best ways to make the farm bill work." Marten also disagreed with reports that the country is in a recession. It takes two consecutive quarters of negative growth to yield a recession, "so we can't be in a recession until April," he said. "Let's try not to worry so much about that." Agriculture is in pretty good shape for the 1990s, he said, noting that farm debts-to-assets ratio has dropped to the same level as in the early 1960s.

Campaign report The amount of campagin funds raised by unsuccessful Yellowstone County Commissioner candidate Robert Dunker, a Democrat, was incorrect in a story Tuesday because of a reporting error earlier by Dunker's campaign treasurer.

Total revenues raised were about $6,631, not $2,925. A campaign report due shortly before the Nov. 6 election could not be filed by the clerk and recorder's office because Dunker's treasurer, Robert Engstrom, wrote his name in the candidate's place rather than Dunker's. Engstrom later corrected the name, but the report was unavailable at the time information was gathered for the first story on campaign funds..
